What is community access television?

Community access TV is a television station where community residents are given the opportunity to learn television production. Residents are then able to use the TV station's equipment and facilities to produce their own TV shows. The programs are then shown on the local cable access channel (Channel 3).

What is Winthrop Community Access Television?

WCAT is an independent, non-profit PEG access cable station established in 1987. WCAT is a first class facility complete with a professional three camera studio, three digital editing suites using Adobe Premiere Pro, and complete line of portable production equipment. WCAT's objective is simple: to give people the opportunity to create and produce their own television programs to communicate information and ideas, to entertain and to become "media literate."

What is a PEG station?

PEG stands for Public, Education, and Government. WCAT cablecasts public access programming on Channel 3, educational access programming on Channel 15, and government access programming on Channel 16.

How does community television benefit me?

Locally produced programming allows you and your neighbors to express your ideas, develop your creative potential and make television a "two-way" medium of communication. You can inform local viewers of your activities, solicit volunteers for charitable causes, promote your events and effect public awareness. If you just plain love an audience, you can sing, dance, tell jokes or read poetry so that all of Winthrop can enjoy your talent! As a viewer, you benefit from programming that allows you to participate in the civic and cultural life of your community from the comfort of your own home.

Who can use Winthrop Community Access Television?

Any resident of Winthrop may use the resources at WCAT by becoming a producer or submitting programs for telecast. Any member of a Winthrop nonprofit organization may also become a member of WCAT.

How do I become a producer?

It's simple! Complete the WCAT basic production class, pay your yearly dues (or volunteer hours) and you're a member. Producers have WCAT's state of the art equipment and professional staff support at their disposal.

When is the basic production class offered?

Orientation and video production courses are offered throughout the year. Call 846-3400 for precise dates and times. The cost is only $90.00 which includes first year dues.

Who watches community television?

WCAT is seen in over 6,450 Winthrop households on AT&T Cable. According to a Chamber of Commerce marketing survey, an astounding 76% of residents watch WCAT regularly.

How can I have a show on WCAT?

Any Winthrop resident can drop off a program to be played on WCAT, as long as it meets technical requirements and the person assumes responsibility for its content. However, in order to produce a show using WCAT's equipment, you must complete the basic production class first (so you'll know how to use the equipment). Also, you may call one of our producers to collaborate with on a show.
